Autumn is a season that brings new energy. There is a gentler vibration in the air, a softer light than that of the season that has just ended, and an invitation to turn inward after the bustle of summer.
Inspired by the work of the artist Lucie Duclos, I created this collage with the colours of autumn — yellows, oranges, browns, and so on — where I included, among other things, the image of a woman in a yoga pose (asana), as well as the image of a field in shades of orange.
This collage conveys the calm of this transitional season.
The next image is a photo of an oil painting on canvas by Gustav Klimt, Birch Forest (also known as Beech Forest), 1903. Here the artist captured the transient spirit of autumn in a painting of a birch forest, where the ground covered with dry leaves in shades of yellow, burgundy, and brown frames the tree trunks.
This work conveys a feeling of calm and silence, highlighting the closure of one cycle (summer) and the beginning of another (autumn).
In these photos from the book Storytelling with Collage by artist Roxanne Evans Stout, we can see some materials collected from nature by Roxanne — flowers, leaves — which she combines with papers, fabrics, and so on, to create collages with different textures, each one telling a unique story and emphasising the artist’s connection with nature.
Autumn is a time of year particularly suited to gathering natural materials — leaves, flowers, branches, stones, and so forth — which the artist can include in their work, giving them new life.
The process of collecting these materials is slow and meditative, deeply connected to nature. It requires full attention to detail as well as an attitude rooted in the present moment.
Creative tip: Try observing the shadows and patterns created by the autumn light — perhaps your next inspiration will be born from there.
