About me
Biography
Hello
I am an artist who lives and works in Porto. I was an only child and also the youngest of the children in the family. In my childhood I didn’t always have friends my age around to play with. This circumstance developed my creativity often leading me to imaginary places and invented games. All this background has influenced my art work in the sense that many of my paintings reveal unreal places and this happens naturally because imagination was present at most of my childhood games.
I started painting (acrylic) in 2007 to fill up a deep need, which ended up being imperative, to develop a craft work using my gaze, my hands and the creative impulse as tools to express myself and communicate in a visual way. I am interested in the observation of everyday life and nature and I try to recreate what I see and to share with people what thrills me through my art work.
I use different techniques and materials (watercolour, coloured pencils, soft pastels, oil pastels, collage, drawing, mixed media), depending on the subjects that inspire me. In 2022 I also started in oil painting and have been influenced by trips I have made to recreate some landscapes.
In addition to my art work, I like listening to music, hiking, going to the seaside, travelling, reading, learning new subjects, watching films and series and going out with friends.
What inspires me
Nature is for me an inexhaustible source of inspiration (landscapes, wildlife, birds, etc).
Other sources of inspiration are oriental painting (sumi- e) and, in general, everything I pay attention to: every day scenarios, readings, trips, music, films, conversations, are the yeast that, consciously or unconsciously, is at the basis of my creative process.
My artistic practice
- GET OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE
In my artistic practice there are two essential aspects : Observe and Experiment, both assuming availability to leave my comfort zone. Without this positioning there is no evolution.
– SKETCHBOOKS
I use sketchbooks either I go out to make quick drawings or sketches or in the studio to experiment with materials and/or to make small drawings or paintings.
Sketchbooks allow me to experiment freely and in them often appear new ideas for larger- sized paintings. In them I use a great range of materials.
- WORK
In my work, regardless of the technique I use, I try to capture the light (real or imagined), I use colours in a intense and often intuitive way and I like to explore textures. Some of my works are Abstract and others are Figurative.
- ABSTRACT WORKS
In these works I do not start from a specific reference, but I will let myself be carried away by the colours, by the light, also taking advantage of the potential of the materials.
- FIGURATIVE WORKS
In some of these works I refer to a photo I have taken or to a drawing I have made on the spot and recreate them using the most suitable technique for the subject. In others, I pick up the memory of a place or a moment lived and try to retain them through painting.
The techniques I use
I use different techniques according to the subject I choose – drawing, watercolour, dry pastels, oil pastels, graphite, liquid acrylic, oils, collage) and often I combine several techniques in one work: MIXED MEDIA.
- drawing
- watercolour
- dry pastel
- oil pastel
- graphite
- liquid acrylic
- oil on canvas
- collages
- WATERCOLOUR WORK
Watercolour is one of the techniques I explore the most.
I am interested in it’s transparency, in the way it reveals the light and in its versatility: I can use it alone or combined with other media and even with collage.
Watercolour is a challenging medium because although it requires control there is always room for the impredictable and this is what makes it fascinating.
In my watercolour works I try to create interesting atmospheres, I use vibrant and even unexpected colours to convey surprise and emotion.
- MIXED MEDIA
In these works, the use of different materials (watercolour, acrylic ink, charcoal, dry pastel, oil pastel, coloured pencil, graphite and collage), and their interaction, create a narrative that often ends up being the subject of the work.
How working with art has impacted on my life
My artist’ s journey has been aligned with my personal growth process.
Working with art has helped me to become a more observant and attentive person and has therefore been essential to deepen the connection with myself and the world.
Trough my art practice I believe that I visually communicate with people at a more intuitive than rational level.
