WHAT IS CHARCOAL?\nCHARACTERISTICS <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Charcoal is a simple medium, it\u2019s just a piece of black carbon.

It is made from selected wood, which is first carefully dried and then\ncharred in an airtight container.

It is a soft material that pulverizes when applied to a support.<\/p>

Some of its characteristics are simplicity, ease of making corrections,\nversatility, etc..<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

2. \u201c NATURAL \u201c CHARCOAL\/ COMPRESSED CHARCOAL<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\u201c NATURAL\u201d CHARCOAL is produced directly by slowing burning tree branches.<\/p>

COMPRESSED CHARCOAL is produced from natural charcoal ground to a fine powder and\nmixed with a binder; it can have various shapes: round, square or rectangular;<\/p>

it may also be in a pencil form;<\/p>

allows you to express countless colours and nuances, from light grey to deep black;<\/p>

allows for deeper blacks than NATURAL CHARCOAL, which has a unique bluish-grey colour<\/p>

However, \u201cNATURAL \u201c CHARCOAL fades less and therefore allows for fewer\nvariations in tone than COMPRESSED CHARCOAL.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Various surfaces can be used to work with charcoal:<\/p>

  • \u00a0Paper with a textured surface (pastel paper, watercolour paper)<\/li>
  • Prepared canvas panel<\/li>
  • Good quality drawing paper (prepared with gesso or covered with a good gouache or acrylic paint)<\/li>
  • For quicker sketches or studies you can use cheaper paper\n(packaging paper, Kraft paper, \u2026); in this case you should use the\nside of the paper that has more texture.<\/li>
  • Once the paper has been prepared, it must dry; only once it has dried can you wok\non it with charcoal.<\/li>
  • When choosing a paper for an important work, you should pay attention to its degree of resistance to light.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
